HOUSEMAN FIELD OPEN FOR FALL SPORTS COMPETITION

Julius Houseman Field is now open for fall sports competition. Check out the game schedules on our GRPS home page under athletics.

The GRPS athletic directors and event staff tour the newly renovated Houseman Field. The first varsity game is scheduled for August 27, 2009.

The new field is designed to accomodate both football and soccer competition.The numbers are down and trim work around the field continues this week at Houseman Field.

Press box construction underway. The two-story building will provide ample room and up-to-date technology for media and coaches.

Turf preparation continues. Approximatley a foot of gravel base is compacted before laying the turf. (June 3, 2009)

Groundbreaking ceremony for Houseman Field took place on Wednesday, April 22, 2009.

Renovation Project Approved

On October 27, 2008, at a regularly scheduled meeting of the Grand Rapids Board of Education’s Finance Committee, district officials unveiled plans to invest up to $6 million in unexpected savings from the 2004 School Construction Bond to renovate the aging Julius Houseman Field.

Houseman Field is used to host football and track events by the four comprehensive GRPS high schools (Central, Creston, Ottawa Hills, and Union). It is also used by Grand Rapids Community College and Aquinas College for various sporting events. Houseman Field was donated to the Board of Education in 1907 with a deed restriction that the land "be used for sports" and "no other purposes" and to "be forever called Julius Houseman Field".

Tower Pinkster was selected asthe Architect and Engineer and Rockford Construction is the project construction manager. The Houseman Renovation is currently in the design phase and the scheduled completion date is August 14, 2009.
